Today, not even 25 percent of all grade crossings are gated in the United States. That leaves approximately 140,000 grade crossings ungated and not wired for safety. This represents a large challenge for railroad operators to install new or enhance existing gates, which can improve safety with minimal short- and long-term maintenance.

Frauscher can help with this transition. Our axle counters work in concert with existing track circuits to improve crossings. Where track circuitry struggles with high maintenance — axle counters provide a high level of reliability with minimal maintenance, even in the harshest of conditions.

Frauscher axle counters and wheel sensors provide a wide range of options for activating/deactivating or resetting grade crossing protection systems in a way that ensures safety and high availability. Our modern technologies can indicate the direction from which a train is approaching and provide clear/occupied status information. This reduces the overall complexity and costs typically associated with grade crossings.

All of this is provided with precision and reliability. Our Frauscher Diagnostic System FDS identifies faults early and prevents them for occurring. This proactive maintenance approach helps to reduce overall costs by maintaining uptime and allowing for more efficient allocation of resources.

Diamond Crossing

Diamond Crossing

Maximum uptime and efficiency can be achieved at diamond crossing using axle counters and wheel sensors. Our axle counters are able to detect the train within and through the crossing point and to increase reliability by seamlessly integrating into overlay and parallel systems. Our wheel sensors are unaffected by extreme weather conditions, enabling greater reliability, and impervious to track return current, which allows for replacing insulated track joints with more stable welded joints and using any type of tie without affecting the detection system.
