Light Rail

Light rail is an urban rail transit system with “light” passenger capacity compared to metro and heavy rail systems. Operating individual railcars or in short multiple unit trains, these are typically electrically-driven with power usually drawn from an overhead electrical line. Absolute right of way is not necessarily grade separated from other traffic in road signaling systems. As a result, grooved rails require special solutions for mounting components on the track, and the influence of electromagnetic rail brakes or passing vehicles other than the train itself must be handled easily by the system.
