Operators responsible for grade crossings often face conflicting priorities - meeting stringent availability and safety requirements while managing budgetary constraints. Only a small percentage of grade crossings in North America are gated, leaving many thousands that are not wired for safety. In the case of crossings that are protected, the most frequently used technology can become inoperable in harsh environmental conditions. In addition, tracks where a train does not pass over for several days can quickly build up rust, resulting in loss of shunt that can make the use of track circuits impossible.
Frauscher has a solution. Our axle counters can work alone or in conjunction with existing track circuits to improve crossing safety. While track circuit systems can struggle with low uptime and availability and high maintenance costs, axle counters provide a high level of reliability with minimal maintenance, even in the harshest of conditions.

Grade Crossing Control Systems
Train detection systems commonly used to protect grade crossings in North America can be negatively impacted by environmental factors such as snow, flooding, road salt and leaf accumulation, resulting in downtime and expensive maintenance. The Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC is a vital, fail-safe SIL4 axle counter that is not affected by harsh conditions, and can detect trains up to 280 mph. It offers flexible design capabilities that can be configured with a vital relay or vital Ethernet interface, allowing seamless implementation and integration with existing infrastructure. The FAdC can either replace or be installed as an overlay to existing track circuits to protect crossings. In DC or AF track circuit based crossings, the FAdC can be implemented by replacing the island circuit alone, or by replacing both the island + approach. The addition of axle counter equipment does not alter track geometry, as the wheel sensors are clamped, not drilled, to the rail.
