Modernizing the Whittier Tunnel

At 13,300 feet, the Whittier Tunnel is the longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America. When the Alaska Railroad Corporation decided to modernize the tunnel’s signaling system, the objective was to replace existing track circuits that were deemed unreliable. Frauscher’s latest axle counting technology provided the highly-reliable train detection solution the Alaska Railroad Corporation needed.



The Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC features functional modularity, flexible scalability and an Ethernet-based interface that allows a wide range of configurations. The software interface enables the FAdC to be integrated effectively into higher-level systems offering great flexibility in terms of design and communications.
